How answers are ranked
Every word that fits your letters is checked against the clue using its dictionary meanings: a synonym that matches counts most, then words that are a kind of what the clue names, then words in the definition — with rarer clue words counting more than common ones. On top of that it follows crossword habits: a plural clue wants a plural answer, a past-tense clue a past-tense answer, "___" clues look for a phrase the answer completes, "Abbr." looks at abbreviations, and "Opposite of…" looks at antonyms. A crossword answer never repeats a word from its clue, so those are pushed down.
It doesn't use any database of past clues or answers, so it works for any clue from any publisher — and it can't "know" a pun. For clues ending in "?", try the anagram helper and think sideways.
