Only here Shows why each suggestion is best: how many words you can expect to be left after it, the worst case, and how the colour patterns split.

How the best guess is picked

For every word you could play, the solver works out the colour pattern it would get against each word that still fits, and scores it by expected information (Shannon entropy, in bits): the more evenly a guess splits the remaining words, the more it tells you. Ties go to words that could be the answer (marked ✓).

Before your first guess, against our list of 2,280 likely answers, the top opener is taler at 5.87 bits (not itself a likely answer); the best opener that could also be the answer is raise.

Word lists: 6,364 playable words and 2,280 likely answers (common words, without simple plurals) from SCOWL by Kevin Atkinson, via the MIT-licensed wordlist-english package. They are our own model of likely answers, not any game's official list. Grind Toolkit isn't affiliated with The New York Times or any puzzle publisher; Wordle is a trademark of its owner.
